Bark R-39UTTKh missile

The Bark (D-19UTTKh complex) development was tasked to excel the USA Trident-2 missile in combat qualities. If it was necessary to reserve the missile and silo dimensions, and also launch weight, a multiple increase in the combat effectiveness was ensured due to the transition to warheads of the middle power class, the improvement of firing accuracy by four fold, rise in resistance of the warhead to damage effects of nuclear explosion by three or four fold, equipment with penetration aids, and firing along maneuvering trajectories (flat, high-angle, with random drifts in arbitrary planes, etc.) with the deployment of warheads within an arbitrary and enlarged zone. In the USA about a two-fold weight of the missile was required for the analogous transition from Trident-1 to Trident-2.

In 1992 trials of the missile cruise and auxiliary engines were completed. The control system passed the ground qualification tests. Before flight tests the ground test stand was used to perform flight development tests of missiles dropped from a floating stand (7 launches); test a separation system of the missile shock absorption system with full-scale mockups (4 launches); try out stage separation processes; work out the middle-power warheads in 19 launches of the K65M-R LV. The joint flight tests with launches of missiles from a ground stand started in 1993. Three launches performed in November 1993, December 1994, and November 1997 were failed.

The complex technical readiness at the end of 1997 was 73%, readiness of the submarine retrofitting under Project 941U was 83.7%. However, in September 1998 the Government accepted a proposal of the Ministries of Economy and Defence on termination of the development of the D-19UTTKh complex with the R-39UTTKh missile.

The development of the D-19UTTKh complex with the Bark R-39UTTKh missile is conventionally related to the third generation, by intention it is a new-generation development.
