Sineva R-29RMU2 missile

In July 1998 the Government took a decision to repair the 667BDRM submarines and determine volumes and terms for further production of the R-29RMU missiles. In October 1998 the RF Government established a procedure and schedule of resumption of the R-29RM missile production (updating). Thus the Sineva R&D (D-9RMU2 missile complex with the R-29RMU2 missile) was initiated. In January 2000 the available missile (without any changes in the stage dimensions) with a four-unit warhead was adopted for further development that can be refitted with a ten-unit warhead. After the draft design review the missile mockups and units underwent comprehensive trials. The state flight tests began in 2003 and were successfully completed in June 2004.

The Sineva R&D resulted in:
- the creation of the R-29RMU2 missile carrying middle-power warheads (developed within the scope of the Stantsia R&D) and penetration aids; implementation of new Russian hardware components in onboard control system (BCS) equipment; integration of the BCS instruments, elements and algorithms of the R-39UTTKh and R-29RMU missiles;
- the creation of the Arbat-U2 shipborne digital computer system that ensured the use of any R-29RM missiles and their combinations;
- the creation of a unified “small telemetry” system;
- the update of the aiming system and ground equipment.

The R-29RMU2 missile has the highest power-and-mass perfection among native and foreign sea- and ground-based strategic missiles and a number of new qualities: enlarged circular and arbitrary areas for deployment of warheads, flat trajectories for all firing ranges in astro-inertial and astro-radio-inertial (if corrected with the GLONASS satellite system) modes of the BCS operation. The Sineva missile potential and high payload capabilities were demonstrated when hitting a firing site more than 11.5 thou km far in the Pacific Ocean waters in 2008.
